PAWNEE - Dorothy Sheedy passed away 3:10 am on Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Memorial Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born January 11, 1921 in New City, IL, the daughter of George and Eula Zimmerli. She married John Henry "Hank" Sheedy and he preceded her in death in 1992. Dorothy is survived by her son, John "Jay" (Elizabeth) Sheedy of Pawnee; four granddaughters, Kelly (Glen) Wood of Bloomington, Christina (Brian) Russell of Glenview, Melissa (Ron) Johnson of Downers Grove, and Jessica Sheedy (fiancé Greg) of Romeoville; five great-grandchildren, Mary-Kate Russell, Alex Wood, John Henry Russell, Danny Johnson and Luke Johnson; one sister, Norma Johnston of St. Charles, MO. She was a graduate of Pawnee High School class of 1938 and was the salutatorian. She attended Eastern Illinois Teachers College (now Eastern Illinois University), McKendree College, and graduated from Sangamon State University. Dorothy was an elementary school teacher for more than 47 years in the Pawnee School district. She began her career in education teaching in a one room school house and after the school consolidation taught in the elementary school. After retiring from teaching, she served as a volunteer and tour guide at Lincoln's Tomb at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield for twenty years. She was an avid reader who just could not put a book down and often read two or three books at the same time. One of her other passions was the history of Abraham Lincoln. Dorothy was especially proud of being the great, great granddaughter of the original settlers of Pawnee, Jacob and Justus Henkle. She was also strong believer in and advocate for the humane treatment of animals. Over the years she was the recipient of many honors, but she was most proud of being the first recipient of the Pawnee High School Distinguish Alumni award. Her greatest joy was being a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and forever a teacher. Visitation will be from 4 PM till 7 PM, Monday, December 19, 2011 at the Pawnee United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday at the church with Rev. Flo Scott officiating. Burial will be in Horse Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations are being accepted for the Pawnee Food Pantry and the Pawnee Community Education Foundation. Bramley Funeral Home, Divernon is in charge of arrangements. |
