School Safety

Hello Pawnee,

The school board and administration recognize with recent events that many questions have been raised about safety and security in schools. Pawnee has been actively looking to improve our safety and security. This letter serves to highlight areas where Pawnee has addressed safety and security and to show ways parents, students, and our community can be proactive with safety and security. Please contact school personnel if you have any further questions.

Pawnee School District:

➢ Safety policies and procedures are currently being evaluated and revised by the school board and administration.

➢ Entrance into the building is monitored by cameras and controlled inside.

➢ Entrances and hallways are monitored by cameras.

➢ Pawnee Police have an office in the building and have a presence in the building on a daily basis.

➢ Annually a safety review meeting is held to discuss procedures of all drills.

➢ Administration is updated through the Statewide Terrorism & Intelligence Center.

➢ School safety drills are conducted as follows: threeevacuation drills (fire); one school bus evacuation drill; one severe weather drill; and one law enforcement drill.

➢ ALICE training (www.alicetraining.com) has been conducted with staff.

This training is done with local police. (active shooter training)

➢ Doorways have been identified with letters for better communication with first responders.

Pawnee Community:

➢ Your patience has been greatly appreciated while you wait for the offices to unlock the door. We appreciate you checking in the office when entering the building.

➢ Continue to monitor and alert the school of any concerning behavior.

➢ Encourage your child to report any concerns to school personnel.

➢ Discuss school and community safety with your child.

➢ Remind your child that we have drills and procedures in place to keep them safe.

➢ Encourage them to participate in all drills in a manner that allows them to be prepared for the occurrence of a real event.

➢ The National Association of School Psychologists’ website has helpful guidelines for parents and educators. Please visit the following link for information.
