FOR THE MAIN IDEA |
The identification of the main idea or central thought of what is read usually involves several processes. Students must distinguish between essential elements, as well as make inferences and judgments--all high-level thinking skills. Although the main idea may be stated directly in a passage, it is also likely that the main idea may not be explicitly expressed, and students will need to infer it.
