Welcome Third, Fourth, & Fifth Grade Students!

With the approval and support of our principal, Mrs. Cline, membership to Study Island was purchased. Study Island is an excellent online assessment preparation program aligned to our state goals and standards.

About Study Island
Pawnee students in grades three, four, and five have their own usernames and passwords which allow them access to the site. Once logged on, students work at their own pace in the area of Reading; records are kept to track progress, and remedial topics are automatically assigned when the student fails an area and needs extra assistance.

The program is divided into sections based on subject; Reading is now the only accessible area. Each section is made up of approximately twenty-five topics that correspond to state standards. Topics consist of a lesson and a bank of practice questions with explanations.

Usernames contain no capitals, no commas, no spaces.

Third Graders: Use your first name, last name, @pawnee
                         Tom Smith would be tomsmith@pawnee
Fourth & Fifth Graders: Use your first initial, last name. @pawnee
                                        Jane Smith would be jsmith@pawnee
Passwords:
Same one used in Mrs. Kern's Computer Lab

Goal of the Program
The goal of the program is to pass every topic. If a student passes every topic, s/he has demonstrated proficiency in all areas and is well prepared for the state test. The letters E=Exceeds Expectations,  M=Meets Expectations,  B=Below Expectations, and AW=Academic Warning are visible, along with a percentage score on the reading report, to indicate the achievement level of the student. These are the same measures used on the ISAT, which your child will be taking in March.

How to Get Started
Click the blue Study Island link above—Log in
Click Start Studying—a topic is chosen for you

Click Lesson—read and study, ask questions
Minimize lesson—you can look at it as you work if needed
Choose the number of questions you want from drop down menu
Click Start Studying again—your first question will appear

*If you get an answer incorrect, be sure to click on Explanation to find out why the question was missed. Learning from mistakes is often one of the best ways to learn. If you got it right, you might want to click on Explanation to reinforce your thinking.

Students
After passing each topic, be sure to print out your personalized Blue Ribbon Certificate for that area; you can do this from home or school.

Your teachers, as well as Mrs. Cline and Mr. Rigdon will be logging on to see how hard you're working; they will also be looking at your reading report.

From Study Island, you can send your teachers, Mrs. Cline, or Mr. Rigdon a message. Watch your mail. . .you may get a message!

*Be sure to check out the superb list of Test Taking Tips at the site.

Good Luck!
Have a GREAT time on Study Island!

Parents
You are encouraged to read and discuss Study Island lessons with your child at home, as well as listen to him/her read questions and think through answer choices. However, do not tell answers; doing so would take away the opportunity to learn from a mistake.

By checking your child's Reading Report at the site you are showing that you care about his/her progress; by taking the time to explain or review a lesson, you are providing individualized, targeted instruction that teachers often lack the time for in a classroom setting. The one on one attention you give your child has a substantial positive impact on progress. Thank you so much for your help and support.

How to Check your Child's Progress
Log on to Study Island–use your child's user name and password; click
Reading Report. You will see the topics your child has studied, and how well s/he has done on each one. You will also be able to compare your child's progress with that of all others at Pawnee School, and all others in Illinois who are Study Island members; a bar graph is used for this comparison.
