Attention: Students Entering Grades 3, 4, & 5 Next Fall

By The Reading Teacher

Our school has access to a great resource for helping students keep skills sharp over the summer. Study Island is the name of the venue, and it is accessible to students via the Internet. If you do not have internet access at home, computers are available at the Pawnee Public Library. If you are unable to go to Study Island, we will be using it at school in the upcoming year, so don't stress; we understand that it will be easier for some to participate than others.

We hope you are able to take advantage of this opportunity to support your child's learning throughout the summer months. Topics covered are aligned to the State of Illinois Learning Standards and therefore also prepare students for the annual ISAT test administered each spring at all Illinois schools.

Your child, excepting those entering third grade*, has already been using Study Island at school and knows the procedure. A lesson is provided for each topic; we encourage you to review it with your child before s/he proceeds to the test. Once a student chooses an answer, there is a feature that explains why it was wrong or right.

Be sure to check your child's Reading Report on the site and compare his/her progress with others in our school and across Illinois. The scale is as follows: E=Exceeds, M=Meets, B=Below, and AW=Academic Warning.

Next fall, we plan to award students for their efforts at the first end-of-the-month assembly. Those students/grade levels answering the most questions in each area* and getting the highest scores will be recognized. It will be interesting/fun to see which grade level puts in the most overall effort this summer, and exciting to come back in the fall and announce winners. Something special is in the works...

Feel free to contact Study Island at 800-419-3191 or support@studyisland.com if you have any questions; they also have a LIVE help feature on the site which works well. You may also direct questions to Diana Doglio, program coordinator at dianadoglio@yahoo.com or contact me at 625-2231.

Study Island can be accessed from our school website at www.pawneeschools.com; or you can go directly to Study Island at www.studyisland.com

Your support is appreciated.
Sincerely, Mrs. Cline/Grade School Principal
