Students who make a wide variety of connections during reading have more possibilities for meaning making. Therefore, students who make connections to their personal experiences and to other texts as well as making connections within the text will have a richer range of ideas as they construct meaning from text. Although making connections is natural, students need to be encouraged to integrate knowledge they have from outside school with school learning. The wider range of background experiences the student has to draw upon the easier this becomes.
